From Art to Website: How We Create Beautiful Sites for Artists

We had the pleasure of working with Maura McDonnell, a multimedia artist from Ireland whose work spans traditional and digital media, blending colour, light, and texture in stunning visual compositions. With a background in visual music, Maura combines her love for music and art, creating moving and still images that reflect both mystery and adventure.

The goal of her new website was to expand her reach and provide an online platform where her unique digital artworks could be purchased as fine art giclée prints. Maura had a clear vision for how she wanted her website to look—she was very specific about the design and color choices to ensure the site aligned perfectly with the vibrant, abstract style of her artwork. We worked closely with her throughout the process to craft a site that truly represented her identity as an artist.

The website features a seamless eCommerce store that has been a great success, with Maura using the platform to not only sell her prints but also engage with her audience through email marketing. One of the challenges was ensuring the design met her high expectations, but in the end, Maura was thrilled with the final result. She now actively updates the blog we set up for her, sharing details about upcoming markets, fairs, and her art lectures, making her site a dynamic hub for her work and interactions with her audience.

It was an exciting project, and we're happy to see Maura thriving with her new online platform, which you can see here! www.mauramcdonnellart.com/

And now over to you! You might ask yourself why is it so important for an artist to have a website in 2024?? I’m glad you asked!

8 Reasons Artists Should Have A Website

  1. Professional Portfolio: A website allows artists to display their entire body of work in one organised space, showcasing both older and newer pieces.

  2. Brand Control: I cannot emphasise this one enough -with their own websites, Artists can fully control the design and branding of their website, ensuring it reflects their unique style and artistic vision!

  3. Wider Reach: A website makes it easier for galleries, buyers, and potential collaborators to discover an artist’s work, increasing exposure beyond social media.

  4. E-Commerce Capabilities: Selling art directly from a website allows you to bypass middlemen, providing a platform for e-commerce with features like online stores and payment processing.

  5. Credibility & Professionalism: A well-designed website helps to establish credibility, making the artist appear more professional and organised!

  6. Centralised Information Hub: Websites act as a central point where visitors can find everything from the artist’s biography and contact information to upcoming exhibitions, press, and blog posts - rather than having to check many different social media platforms for different information!

  7. Blog & Updates: Artists can use a blog to share updates, write about their creative process, and connect more deeply with their audience. Get to know the person behind your favourite pieces!

  8. Long-Term Engagement: Features like newsletters and mailing lists can be integrated into the website, allowing artists to build long-term engagement with their audience and maintain relationships with collectors and fans.

A website is a powerful tool for growing visibility and sales while maintaining artistic autonomy.
